What Made Me Become a Digital Marketer?
My Digital Marketing Journey so far…
Hi everyone,
I’ve been a Digital Marketing Expert since 2017. In this article, I’ll be sharing my story about how I became a Digital Marketer and what made me choose this Career path.
Although it may not be an exciting profession to some people, I’ll tell you what gets me up every morning and motivates me to help my clients grow their businesses digitally.
Grab a coffee, kick back, and get ready — because this story’s about to take you on an exciting ride!
In The Beginning
It all started in 2016. I had just graduated from high school, Donald Trump had won the U.S. Elections, and the first season of Stranger Things had just come out. I was 18 years old and looking for a part-time job to support my daily expenses.
Digital Marketing wasn’t the first thing I tried. Quite frankly, I wasn’t even familiar with the term. Back then, I worked as a brand promoter for a local marketing agency. I used to sell other people’s stuff to Customers, just not Digitally.
I also tutored two high schoolers. Not to brag, but I graduated from one of the best colleges in my country and was quite good at math and physics.
I was doing well for myself. I was making 10–15k BDT a month, which was a good sum for a single guy like me back then. I was out of my parents’ house, living in the capital city, sharing a room with two other roommates, and trying to get a Scholarship to study Computer science abroad! That’s right; I have always wanted to have the experience of studying abroad. That’s a story for another time.
People Making Big Bucks, Working Online
One afternoon, I was at a coffee shop going through the local newspaper, trying to find better marketing job opportunities. While doing so, an article caught my eye: “College student made $3k doing Digital Marketing.”
I was curious enough to immediately read the whole article. Certainly, the article was more about the College student himself and less about Digital Marketing.
The most intriguing part was that a guy almost my age was making 20 times more money than I! And getting paid in USDs — that was some next-level thing for me. And the very moment, I knew I wanted a piece of that.
The Grind
Of course, nothing good comes easily.
After reading that article, I didn’t become a six-figure digital marketer overnight. In fact, the next few months were more confusing than inspiring. I started Googling terms like “What is digital marketing?” and “How to make money online.” I came across blog posts, YouTube videos, and random gurus claiming they had the secret sauce.
Spoiler alert: most of them didn’t!!
I remember staying up late watching Neil Patel videos on SEO and reading Moz blog posts without understanding half of what they said. I signed up for every free course I could find — HubSpot Academy, Google’s Digital Garage, and even random Facebook groups where newbies like me were trying to figure things out.
My first real breakthrough came when I landed a freelance gig through a Facebook group. A small business owner needed someone to manage their Facebook page and run boosted posts. I had no formal experience — but I offered to do it for just $50. I worked harder than ever before, made designs on Canva, studied audience targeting, and learned how to run ads using trial and error.
Guess what? The client was happy enough to give me a 5-star rating. And more importantly, I was hooked.
From Freelancer to Digital Marketer
That one project led to another. Then another. I was no longer just “trying things online.” I was building a career.
In 2018, I officially landed a remote job at a digital agency, where I got hands-on experience managing SEO, Facebook ads, and email marketing for real clients. I worked on eCommerce stores, local businesses, SaaS tools — you name it. I made mistakes. I burned some ad budgets. But I learned fast.
Eventually, I started getting clients of my own. I created my Fiverr and Upwork profiles. I built my portfolio. I invested in paid tools like Ahrefs and SEMrush. It wasn’t long before I was running full digital campaigns — from strategy to execution — by myself.
That’s when I realized: I wasn’t just doing this for the money anymore. I genuinely enjoyed helping businesses grow online. I loved tracking results, running A/B tests, and seeing the impact of a well-optimized landing page.
Why I Still Wake Up Excited
Today, I’ve been in digital marketing for over 7 years. I’ve worked with startups, solopreneurs, and established brands. I’ve helped generate thousands of leads, ranked dozens of websites on Google, and driven ROI-positive ad campaigns.
But what really keeps me going is the creativity and constant evolution of this field. No two days are the same. There’s always a new platform, algorithm, or challenge to explore. And that’s what makes it exciting.
Digital marketing gave me freedom, skills, and a purpose. And it all started with a random newspaper article and a curious mind.
If you’re reading this and wondering if you should give digital marketing a shot, my answer is a big YES. Just be ready to put in the work, stay humble, and keep learning.
The internet is full of opportunities. You just have to keep an open mind and chase them with both hands.
Thanks for reading my journey.
