Netflix’s Baby Reindeer happened to me in real life
Have you seen Baby Reindeer? It’s a limited series on Netflix about Donny (played by Richard Gadd and based on his real-life experience), a struggling comedian whose life is turned upside down when Martha, a deranged psychopath, stalks him obsessively for years.
Without giving the story away, something that starts innocently enough slowly escalates to the point where Donny’s life is almost ripped to pieces, and you know what?
The public reception to it has been interesting. Unsurprisingly, there has been the usual brigade of man haters reflexively leaping to the woman’s defence to say Gadd shouldn’t have outed his real-life stalker like that (something they’d never say if the genders were reversed).
But, it’s also started an authentic conversation on the abuse that men can and do often suffer at the hands of women.
And you know what? I want to contribute to this discussion because I met my very own Martha once too.
