The Oxford English Dictionary defines a stereotype as a “widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing”. Stereotypes are ubiquitous. They cover such things as racial groups (“all Russians drink vodka”), genders (“women are bad drivers”), activities (“flying is dangerous”), and some others.
