This week, I’d like to share three documentary projects that look either specifically at Atlanta or are from Atlanta-based filmmakers.

As a lot of us are probably aware, the film industry here in the ATL has been booming. It’s nearly inpossible to get around the city without encountering a crew from The Walking Dead or The Vampire Diaries or Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta. In addition to the television work, more and more feature-length films are being shot here, including installments of the Fast and the Furious and Anchorman franchises. With all this activity, it would seem likely that Atlanta would also be encountering a boom in the documentary market. We do have the Atlanta International Documentary Film Festival, but this event doesn’t focus solely on the Atlanta or southern-based documentary.

Here are three docs worth checking out that deal with Atlanta.

The first is from Atlanta-based filmmaker Atermus Jenkins. It’s titled Coloring Outside the Lines and it focuses on the work of black tattoo artists. It features several Atlanta artists and establishments.

The next is from Kelly Stroup, an Atlanta filmmaker. She follows a burlesque troop from the city and talks to them about the importance of the art form. This short documentary is called The Big Reveal.

The last one is from an on-going project called The Atlanta Way, which examines gentrification and the history of public housing in the city. You can find their (successful!) Kickstarter page here, and a short version of a rough cut of the film here:

Please feel free to share or post other Atlanta documentaries that you know about. Great cities have great stories. And go give your local documentary filmmaker a hug (or five dollars — making documentaries is expensive!)
