After I submitted my original post Adjoa had a recommendation as to what my topic should be however after further consideration and insight from Dr.Caison I have elected to explore Education in the South. I would like to delve deeper into

The desegregation of southern schools

How zoning influences the quality of education

Public vs. Private Education

Disparity between the quality of education in the North and the South

I believe that my initial topic idea would have resulted in my running out of interesting and thought provoking avenues to explore before the 14 week project culminated; therefore, expanding my topic was necessary.

I plan to research Brown vs. Board of Education and how it led to the desegregation of schools in the South, as well as the methods used to desegregate the schools.

I would like to investigate how school zones are created. If tax revenue impacts the drawing of zone lines, and variations in the way curriculum is taught in schools in the same district.

I have not planned out how I will investigate the Public vs. Private education aspect.

I will look at testing trends, graduation rates and college acceptance rates as a tool for investigating the disparity in educational quality in the North vs. the South.

The image I selected was of Ruby Bridges being escorted by Federal Marshals to William Frantz Elementary. She was the first African American student to attend the school located in the 9th ward of New Orleans. I selected this image because it is a powerful depiction of the desire for education in the African American community as well as the residual effects of slavery and Jim Crow in the South.
