3 PM, Weather Permitting

Every day at 3 PM I have some sort of fitness routine scheduled. That time works best with my body clock and also because when my son gets home from school at around that time all he wants to do is play a bit of video games with his friends.

But, as Eisenhower said, I find planning to be useful but plans useless.

Where I live in the Pacific Northwest, rain is in the forecast more often than not from October through May. That means the window to get outside is short and unpredictable. So while I have every intention of doing some sort of fitness routine at 3 PM every weekday, if Mother Nature has her way then Father Time’s plans fall by the wayside.

So I’ve decided that I must have options when it comes to my fitness routine. One of those options doesn’t involve NOT doing some form of exercise.

If it’s sunny at 3 PM — or at least not raining — I will go for a run. But if it is raining, then I will either complete a 25 minute exercise program or do some yoga. Either way, I’m getting my fitness in.

Keep in mind I don’t want to run every single day so over the course of a week I need to watch for those pockets of clear weather and adjust accordingly. I need to be nimble. I need to be flexible. But I also need to keep it simple so that my fitness routine also stays durable.

I’ve tried to keep a fitness regimen going for many years but I haven’t thought through all of the parameters that will affect it thoroughly. I’ve gotten closer every single time, but nothing has stuck. I feel like this new way of approaching my fitness plan — 3 PM, weather permitting — Is my best plan yet.

I suppose Mother Nature and Father Time will tell.
