A Really Close Shave
I cut myself shaving today. Not just a nick, either. A nice little slit across the left side of my chin, undoubtedly when I was trying to navigate the slope between neck and face.
It’s actually still bleeding.
I cut myself because I was trying to race through the process. I wanted to get the shaving done so I could move on to something else. Something more compelling. Something less maintenance-like.
I should know better.
The maintenance stuff is key. If you rush through it, there’s a strong chance something will go wrong. Clearly, cutting myself shaving was “that” something this time around. It happened immediately and I’m still dealing with the fallout.
The maintenance work isn’t as compelling as the creative work. But if you do it right — with care and focus — then it’ll keep you from having to deal with it while you try to do the creative work. It won’t be in your face as much because you’ll have dealt with it appropriately.
When it comes to the things you need to maintain, don’t rush them or hush them. Just do them.
And do them as well as you possibly can.
