The Case for Freewrite
I have written almost every single piece of writing over the past few years on my iPad Pro.
But I’m writing this on Freewrite. And I never want to go back.
Freewrite is an all-in-one writing device conceived by Astrohaus. It combines the best elements of a writing environment: elegant hardware that is both portable and striking as well as focused software that connects to the cloud without getting all in your face about it.
One of the best qualities of Freewrite is the e-ink screen. I’ve been longing for a writing device that allows me to sit on my back deck while writing, as I am right now. Freewrite takes care of that longing.
Even though I pride myself on practicing productivity tactics that keep distractions at bay, it never hurts to have something to take it that one step farther. I love using Drafts for writing — primarily quick captures of ideas — but its distraction-free environment had me writing almost exclusively in the app. Before, I’d tried Byword, Ulysses, and others as distraction-free writing options (with Ulysses being the one I devoted most of my time and attention to) but with Freewrite I can remove all distractions from my midst and simply write.
You see, distraction-free writing apps don’t fare as well against missing out on a gorgeous day because you can’t write as effectively outside. My iPad Pro’s glare makes it tough. The iPhone is too small for me to make it work as well.
Freewrite has everything I need and want in a minimal and distraction-free writing experience. I can use it anywhere and at any time. (And with Astrohaus introducing the Traveler to the mix, there’s even more portability in store for writers just like me.)
Freewrite isn’t for everyone. But nothing ever is. I’ve been waiting to give this device a shot ever since its successful crowdfunding campaign, and in preparation for this podcast episode with Astrohaus’s own Adam Leeb, they sent me one to test drive … if only for a week or two.
I’m not looking forward to sending it back.
Freewrite has won me over. I’m excited to get my hands on one I can keep forever. It suits me and my workflow to a tee, ensuring that nothing can get between me and the words I want to put out into the world.
Not even myself.
If you’re a writer, give Freewrite a good look. It’s well worth your attention, especially if your intention is to sit down anywhere, anytime, and just write.
Seriously give Freewrite Traveler a look as well. You can check out Astrohaus’s newest offering here.
