The Thing About Free Time

Casey Neistat has an interesting relationship with free time.

The popular YouTuber shared as much in one of the videos he’s produced for his channel called “Fat and Lazy”:

“Free time is the enemy of progress.”

I’m not suggesting that you need to work every hour of the day when you’re not sleeping. What I encourage you to do is allocate the time you have using themes and knowing what you could do with time that isn’t otherwise committed. That’s a feeling that is freeing, despite the thought that it will cause friction in your life.

The football team I follow is playing their last game of the season today. That’s going to free up some of my time during the week — nearly three hours.

It won’t necessarily be free time, though. I don’t look at it that way.

Instead, I look at it as time that I’m free to use on the things I already know I want to pursue. This “free time” actually frees up attention rather than time — and that’s attention I can give to the things I intend to do.

Remember that time isn’t free. Any time you have is not free time. Don’t spend it freely; invest it wisely.
