What You Can Do in Two Weeks
There are plenty of ideas as to how long it takes to start a habit and make it stick.
This article from Healthline drives that point home:
“It can take anywhere from 18 to 254 days for a person to form a new habit and an average of 66 days for a new behavior to become automatic.”
But when you have a routine in place already — and routines are essentially a framing device for habits to live stacked one on top of each other — then I’ve found you can get habits to stick in two weeks.
Whenever I add something new to my evening or morning routine, it tends to take hold quickly. I’ve added a new skin routine to both bookends of my day and now it just feels weird if I don’t complete it during each of those routines. It only took two weeks for that to happen.
But there’s something you need to keep in mind to make this work.
The key is to make sure that whatever habits you’re adding to a routine that it’s something that you really want to make happen and that you don’t add too many things to that routine either. If you want that habit to serve you quickly, then you need to serve what it needs to do that: attention.
Things that are really important and given space to stand out will be able to garner that attention better.
It’ll also help you do what you can do in just two weeks.
