Your Line of Succession

Prince Harry left behind his life with The Royal Family late in 2019. He moved to North America and started down his own path — a path he’s forging with his own family. He’s creating his own line of succession.

While Harry, Duke of Sussex, has left the United Kingdom he remains sixth in line to the throne. That said, it would take something catastrophic for him to assume the throne. His father would have to pass on, along with his older brother William AND all of William’s children before he would become king. So it’s highly unlikely he’ll assume that role.

With that in mind, he’s taking control of his own path forward. I’d suggest he’s doing it in a way rarely seen from a British royal. But since he has no control over that line of succession, he’s taking control of what he can — his own line of succession.

You need to do the same. We all do.

We cannot control certain unchangeable elements of our lives, we can only control how we handle them. Sometimes that will mean putting in the work only to see things go in a different direction than we’d hoped. Sometimes it’ll mean taking bold action to give ourselves and those we love a better life than we’d have by staying put. (I think Harry did that.)

So how do you craft your own line of succession?

Focus on what you can control. Be kind. Do good things. Make things that matter — including moments that otherwise might slip away with little meaning at all. If you want to make sure you’re doing all of those things, then track that in a journal of some sort.

Your line of succession starts with you. How successful it is also ends with you.
