“Bandaging” Humans, Animals, and Others
Looking at bandages will bring the imagery of being injured and needing bandages to stop the bleeding. In Shen Jing Dong’s “Bandaging” collection, he has a vast range of different characters in bandages. Constantly adding new variations to the series since 2012, Shen Jing Dong explores how there are many characters who needed to be bandaged.
It is intriguing to see soldiers and civilians bandaged up with splots of blood soaking through the bandages with a smile. It almost feels as if they are detached from their injuries and pain. Somewhat portraying an indifference towards the grave wounds that have been inflicted upon them. Such a take on human behaviour is something only Shen Jing Dong can do with his unique style and perception of the human situation.
Adding on to bandaged humans are bandaged animals. With a different message altogether, Shen Jing Dong not only painted bandaged animals but also created a cloth sculpture of a wounded rabbit holding a rose for a three-dimensional showcase instead of the usual two-dimensional art piece. The wounded rabbit is most notable in this series as Shen Jing Dong views rabbits to be weak and pitiful and therefore, an injured rabbit is even more pitiful. It definitely does bring out emotions of oneself when looking at an innocent bunny that is unfortunately injured, prompting the viewer to take action and do their part to protect the animals.

While the rhinoceros is not bandaged up, there are blotches of red paint over the animal, a theme often seen in the “Bandaging” series. Another innocent-looking animal with small black dots as eyes is reaching out to people in hopes that their species will be protected and one day no longer face extinction.
Shen Jing Dong has expressed his wishes to not just paint humans and animals but even plants and other possible characters.
