I joined the Boost Nomination Pilot in November 2023 as an official editor for Age of Empathy. I was invited by fellow Medium writer and new friend Christopher Robin. By then, I’d been on Medium for five years and had mostly gone it alone, dropping sad essays in my gloomy corner of Medium and making few friends along the way.

I didn’t know it then, but by welcoming me to the Age of Empathy family, Chris had connected me with a wonderful community of writers, fellow essayists who had many stories to tell.

After editing for a couple of months, I was excited to be accepted into the Boost Nomination Pilot — or BNP as we “nommers” refer to it — because it meant I had a teeny tiny bit of control over helping writers achieve some success on Medium. It also gave me the potential to earn up to $900, income that would be somewhat dependable compared to my story earnings which have always been a bit of a wild card (The most I ever made in one month was $2500, but I barely broke $100/month in earnings in 2022 and for most of 2023).

I started nominating stories with high hopes and even higher spirits. I felt I had some value to add to the program. I’m a full-time content writer…
