Be the first one there

Really. Just show up early, write an interesting bio, post a flattering picture. Then continue to show up. Contribute. Better, contribute something original, something entertaining. Don’t worry if no one reads it at first, just keep doing it. Do you know how many publications I unfollow because they just stopped posting.

Plus, as an early user, the rules aren’t set in stone. Be the first to make them — invent a term, start a publication. Find your schtick and stick to it, you’ll be a guaranteed original. You’d be surprised how popular mediocre can be when there’s no one else around, take it from me. Plus you’ll need the time to get better at writing.

Talk to the hosts

People put a lot of time into building this oh so new platform, try engaging them. Throw out some of your designey usery ideas. Ponder about the future of said platform. Try and meet the founder. Keep talking to them about the platform and you’ll be a household name.

Even better, you know what people love more about than talking about their work, praises for their work. And when you comment on platform features, leave some room for improvement — things could be always better, especially with you around. (See: If You Can’t Beat Them, Join Them) Make sure they don’t forget that the platform is definitely better with you around. You are after all, the user.

Be authentic with others

This should go without saying but you’d be surprised how often I have to remind people of this. There are real people contributing to this community, whatever your opinions of them. (See: Being a dick isn’t as cool as you think) Show some respect to everyone else and maybe don’t complain ALL of the time.

Like really, while being smarmy might get you far, quick…be real. This isn’t just some popularity content — although it really is, just don’t let on. Listen, you got in the door early, but the party is getting crowded awfully fast. Make some friends. Start a conversation. Be nice.

Write a list about something

Still figuring that one out.
