Metamorphosis of a Ph.D. Student’s Personal Journey
During the summer months, the laboratory bustles with numerous undergraduates and interns. These eager minds gather, each laden with many questions, driven by the desire to make informed choices for their impending futures. They seek guidance on manipulating various apparatuses and equipment in the lab as they endeavor to master the skills necessary for their scientific pursuits. They are working with us while we set a reaction, calculate, or design an experimental setup. In this vibrant atmosphere, they are provided a golden opportunity to discern whether the laboratory environment resonates with their aspirations for the years ahead as potential graduate students. This immersion allows them to grasp the essence of a researcher’s life, shedding light on the challenges and gratifications that await them.
The questions I get are generally related to the research I am engaged in. However, today, I got the interesting but most admirable question ever. My undergraduate student expressed a keen interest in understanding the transformative journey I underwent during my Ph.D. While we were experimenting, he posed an unexpected question, phrased precisely as “How do you undergo personal growth throughout your academic journey?”. Caught off guard, but I truly appreciated his thoughtful approach to evaluating whether pursuing a Ph.D. would suit him. I must admit, I also find myself slightly envious of his ability to ask the right questions, a skill I didn’t possess at his age.
While I don’t have an immediate response, his question prompted me to reexamine my own Ph.D. journey again. Beyond the academic experiences, I began contemplating how I evolved along this path and in which aspects it contributed to my transformation. Interestingly, my undergraduate student ended up teaching me a lesson (it is a kind of proof that a Ph.D. is a never-ending learning experience). Let’s dive into my answers to that:
