Acadium Student Success: How Joan Used Her Apprenticeship to Start Her Own Agency

Joan Ting was interested in digital marketing — so she completed an apprenticeship then opened her own agency. Her determination, combined with guidance from her mentor, helped her kickstart her career

We talked to Joan and asked her about why she did an apprenticeship and what she learned from her mentor. Here is her amazing GenM success story.

Hi Joan! Can you tell us why you wanted to do a digital marketing apprenticeship?

I’m really fascinated by digital marketing, and doing an apprenticeship was a great way to understand how it works to build my own agency.

Who did you apprentice with and what skills did you gain?

I apprenticed with Robert Maine, founder of Lisstid. From him, I learned about market research, eCommerce, and SEO.

How much experience did you have before your apprenticeship and what were your key takeaways after you completed it?

Before I started, I only knew basic marketing. Now, I’ve become better at eCommerce and SEO. I got better at marketing, in general.

Additionally, I’ve learned a lot about this new platform, Getshop, which, I find, is so much better than the existing platforms (e.g.Shopify, Clickfunnels and so on).

Can you share your top tip for GenM students who want to secure an apprenticeship?

1. Be approachable.

2. Be communicative.

3. Be attentive.

What are your favorite marketing tools?

My favorite tools are Mailchimp, Canva, and MailerLite.

What is your dream job?

My dream job is anything that’s purely remote.

What’s next for you?

I launched my very own agency and I’ve landed some clients already. Moving forward, I’ll continue working on my skills and working on my agency.
