Alarming | Inquiétant
By Diane Rafizadeh, JE’19
In the mortal world, the things we fear most needn’t be goblins and ghouls — but rather, each other.
ORIGINAL
TRANSLATION
What do we find in the darkness
What is it that horrifies?
What is it there in the fog
Of which we are so terrified?
Where is the phantom, the spectre, the most hair-raising of ghosts?
Where is the evil spirit?
He resides in our hearts, in our fear
He traps us in his spider’s web
Will he leech off of us? No, no!
He feeds on prejudice instead!
He is the neighbor, the classmate
The one you don’t talk to
He is the alt-right supporter
Who attempts to corrupt you
The spookiest of ghosts, he is
Don’t forget him just yet
Because — guess what?
He hasn’t yet departed.
