Even Death Won’t Do Us Part | ถึงตายก็ไม่พรากจากกัน

From goosebumps to cold sweat, we experience all sorts of unpleasant feelings when watching horror movies. So why do we? For a large number of Thai people, the predilection for horror movies stem from a cultural fascination that has long been an integral part of Thai society and will continue to be for many generations.

เขาโอบกอดเธอด้วยความรักและความห่วงใยที่แม้วันเวลาผ่านไปก็ไม่เคยจางหายแค่ได้ยืนที่จุดนี้กับเธอคนนี้ที่รอคอย มานานเขาก็พอใจแล้ว มองไปรอบๆเขายังเห็นบ้านไม้ไผ่ยังคงแข็งแรง ห้องครัวด้านนอกไม้ก็ยังสภาพดีสะอาดอย่างที่จําได้ เขานึกถึงตอนที่ระหว่างหลบอยู่ในด่านตอนสงครามดําเนินว่าจะมี ทางกลับบ้านไปหา นาค ภรรยาของเขา ไปหาชีวิตเดิมๆได้หรือไม่ แต่ดีที่คุณพระคุณเจ้าได้คุ้มครองเมตตาให้เขาสามารถหาทางสร้างเรือแพพาย กลับบ้านอย่างปลอดภัย การกลับมาบ้านครั้งนี้ควรจะเป็นภาพที่สวยงาม เขาผู้ที่ได้รอดตายจากชีวิตสงครามแสนทรหด เธอที่ได้เฝ้ารอจนเขากลับมาพร้อมกับลูกน้อย แต่ภาพที่แท้จริงแล้วมันไม่ใช่ เพราะพอกล้องซูมออกมาเราก็เห็นว่าแท้จริงแล้วบ้านไม้ไผ่นั้นทั้งโทรมทั้งเก่าเหมือนไม่มีคนอยู่มานานแล้ว มีใบไม้ปลิวกระจัดกระจายเต็มพื้นที่ ผู้หญิงแสนสวยผมยาวกลางหลังที่เห็นนั้นที่แท้จริงแล้วเป็นผี เธอได้เสียชีวิตตอนให้กำเนิดลูกน้อยแต่เพราะว่าความรักของเธอนั้นยังคงผูกผันกับพี่มากสามีของเธอ แม้ตัวได้จากโลกไปแล้ววิญญานยังคงอยากอยู่ในชีวิตนี้ อยู่รอการกลับมาของคนรักถึงแม้เธอจะเป็นผีก็ตาม

และนั้นก็คือฉากสุดท้ายจากหนังภาพยนตร์ พี่มาก ดัดแปลงมาจากตำนานแม่นาคพระขโหนงที่รั้งอันดับหนึ่งในลำดับหนังสามารถโกยเงินได้สูงสุด นอกจากทำเงินได้ถึง 28 ล้านเหรียญสหรัฐแล้วยังมีรอบฉายไปทั่วเอเชียจนถึงอเมริกา จากหมวดหนังโรแมนติกไปถึงหนังชีวิตแสนเศร้ามีหนังหมวดหนึ่งที่สามารถทำเงินได้สูงสุดครั้งแล้วครั้งเล่าและนั้นก็คือหนังผี ภาพยนตร์สร้างไม่ว่ามาจากตำนานอย่าง แม่นาค หรือหมู่บ้านผีดุอย่าง ลัดดาแลนด์ ก็ยังเป็นหนังที่ืใครๆก็ไปดูกันเพราะอยากจะสัมผัสถึงความสะพรึ่งกลัว ขนลุก เข้าถึงโลกของผี คนไทยหลายคนต่างให้ความสนใจกับสิ่งที่ไม่ใช่มนุษย์ และเชื่อว่าตลอดชีวิตคนเรามีพลังอะไรบางอย่างที่เราไม่อาจจะเข้าใจได้แต่คอยกำหนดชีวิตเราไว้ ตำนานแม่นาคถูกเล่าขานผ่านหลายรุ่นของครอบครัวตั้งแต่ช่วงของราชกาลที่สี่ ในกรุงเทพและส่วนกลางมีศาลทั่วเมืองโดยมีคนไทยและต่างชาติมาถวายดอกไม้

คำถามที่ทุกคนอยากรู้คือคนไทยเชื่อในผีแม่นาคจริงหรือไม่ เชื่อว่ามีผู้หญิงจากหมู่บ้านเล็กๆแห่งหนึ่งรักและหลงสามีจนความตายไม่สามารถพรากเธอไปจากเขาได้ เชื่อว่าเธอจะคอยที่แม่น้ำทุกวันเพื่อที่จะรอการกลับมาของพี่มากและพยายามอย่างที่สุดที่จะไม่ให้พี่มากรู้ว่าเธอเป็นผีเพื่อที่จะให้เขาอยู่ข้างเธอตลอดไป ความเชื่อในสิ่งเหนือมนุษย์กับพวกผีวิญญานผูกผันกับคนไทยมาเป็นเวลาหลายชั่วคนทั้งในวัฒนธรรมและประเพณี คำตอบของคำถามว่าแม่นาคมีตัวตนหรือไม่พวกเราคงไม่มีทางรู้ แต่สำหรับคนไทยแล้วสิ่งที่น่าดึงดูดที่สุดคือความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างมนุษย์กับโลกของทูตผีปีศาจ สิ่งที่ไม่ธรรมดาและพลังเหนือเกินที่คนธรรมดาอาจเข้าใจได้ ไม่ว่าจเป็นหนัง ละคร เรื่องเล่า ทุกคนตื่นเต้นกับการได้สัมผัสถึงพลังของวิญญาน ตำนานแม่นาคแสดงถึงความเชื่อในชีวิตประจำวันว่าคนกับวิญญานมีความผูกผันเกี่ยวข้องกันที่แน่นหนา สำหรับแม่นาคนั้นก็คือความรักที่ไม่มีวันจางหาย สำหรับเรื่องอื่น อย่างลัดดาแลนด์ ความผูกผันที่เหลืออยู่คือความแค้น ในเรื่องเล่าของลัดดาแลนด์วิญญานตนหนึ่งมีความแค้นจากชีวิตครอบครัวที่ล้มเหลวและพยายามที่จะทำให้ครอบครัวที่ยังคงอยู่ในหมู่บ้านลัดดาแลนด์ไม่แยกกันไปก็ตายเหมือนกันกับเขา ข่าวคราวของผีดุ วิญญานเร่ร่อน ถูกแพร่กระจายไปทั่วหลายโดยมีพวกสื่อกับภาพยนตร์คอยจ้องที่จะนำไปดัดแปลงเป็นหนังหรือละครเพื่อที่จะโกยเงินจากคนไทยส่วนใหญ่ที่มีความสนใจด้านนี้

คนไทยมีความอยากรู้อยากเห็นและความสนใจอย่างมากสำหรับสิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเหนือธรรมชาติ หรือไม่ก็สิ่งที่ยากที่จะอธิบายในชีวิตประจำวัน จากประวัติศาสตร์ไทยแล้วเคยมีการทดลองใน มนตร์ดำ เวทมนตร์คาถา และสิ่งต่างๆในด้านนี้มาตลอด มีคนหลายกลุ่มที่ต้องการจะเข้าใจถึงโลกแห่งคาถาอาคม วิญญาน และ ความตาย สำหรับคนอื่นๆพวกเขาแค่ต้องการที่จะสัมผัสความตื่นเต้นความกลัวจากการที่ได้ยินเรื่องราวเหนือมนุษย์ในละครและภาพยนตร์ พวกเขามีโอกาสที่จะได้ไตร่ตรอง ทำความเข้าใจกับความเป็นไปได้ของพลังและสิ่งมีชีวิตเหนือมนุษย์ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นพลังที่สามารถทำให้คู่รักอยู่ด้วยกันตลอดไปได้ พลังที่ทำให้คนที่แค้นเอาคืนความทุกข์ตัวเองได้ หรือพลังอะไรบางอย่างที่เชื่อมต่อคนเรากับชืวิตหลังความตาย ที่ที่มนุษย์ยากที่จะเข้าใจได้อย่างแท้จริง

TRANSLATION

He embraced her tenderly, letting himself sink into the loving arms he long awaited. His bamboo hut, simple yet sturdy, with the outdoor kitchen built also from bamboo and plain wood, were in his eyes still immaculate as he remembered. As he huddled in the war bunker with fallen comrades next to him, he didn’t know if he would ever make it back to the village. But with the gods looking down on him, he managed to survive and paddle back safely to the comfort of his village home in a crude wooden boat he built. It would have been a sweet romantic scene — the return of the scarred soldier to his sleepy village home embracing his loyal waiting wife who was cradling their bundled baby. But it wasn’t. Because as the camera pans out, the audience witnesses instead a destroyed bamboo hut with overgrown trees and leaves strewn all over. No one has inhabited the house for a period of time. The woman with the traditional long flowing black hair seen embracing her husband was actually a ghost — she had died during childbirth, and yet, still unfailingly in love, her soul remained to haunt her house waiting for her husband to come back and be with his loyal wife.

That was the final scene to an all-time highest grossing Thai movie, Pee Mak, an adaptation of Ma Nak Pra Kanong, one of the most renowned folklores in Thai culture. Apart from achieving earnings of around $28 million, the movie was shown all over East Asia and even in the United States. From the scores of various romcoms, dramas, and heart-rending films, horror films have always garnered the highest amount of interest from Thai movie-goers. Films ranging from traditional folklore like Ma Nak to a haunted house in a suburban neighborhood like Laddaland, Thai movie fans flock to the cinemas for the heart-dropping suspense, the lure of the supernatural, and the brief period of experiencing the paranormal. Many Thai people are fascinated with the unknown — the concept that there is a higher power present constantly in our lives. The Ma Nak legend has been around since the reign of King Rama IV — that is, a story that has been passed on through generations of Thais since the 1850s. The Ma Nak ghost has multiple shrines dedicated to her throughout the central region of Thailand, with locals and foreigners alike visiting every day to pay their respects.

But do Thai people genuinely believe that she existed? That a young woman living in a rural village could be so ardently in love with her husband that even death could not part her soul from this earth? That she would wait by the river that would carry her husband’s boat back to her every day, attempt to conceal her ghost form from him so that he would stay by her side forever? The respect for the supernatural has long been an integral part of Thai culture and tradition. The answer to whether Ma Nak was there to haunt the villagers who tried to expose the secret of her death will remain a mystery. But to the Thai people, the connection between the supernatural world of ghosts and humans is what is actually the most effective part of the story — and of any other ghost film, story, or folklore. The story of the ghost of Ma Nak demonstrates the prevalent Thai belief that as humans die, there is still a tie that keeps them involved with the present world. For Ma Nak it was her undying love for her husband. For other ghost stories or horror films like Laddaland, it was vengeance. In Laddaland, an angry spirit haunts the neighborhood, breaking apart families, as the spirit itself tries to reconcile with its past failures with its family in the human life. Stories and rumors of violent spirits seeking revenge readily circulate throughout communities, and are gobbled up by the media who are eager to please the Thai obsession for horror ghost stories.

There is an insatiable craving Thai people seem to have for complicated happenings — events that are difficult to explain in the normal context of life. Within Thai society, many have dabbled with witchcraft, black magic, and other forms of paranormal activity, attempting to understand what the connection is between the supernatural and human beings. Others enjoy the thrilling aspect of it through films and movies. These films and movies serve as an outlet for fascinated people to explore the possibility of a higher power — one that allows for lovers to stay connected forever, one that brings revenge to those who did wrong, or one that bridges the gap to the unknown afterlife, a place that us human beings can never truly fathom.
