Family History | Historie mé rodiny
By Olivia Noble, CC ‘19
“Family History” is a poem about memory, ancestry, and migration originally written in Czech.
ORIGINAL
To se stalo před mnoha generacemi, roky, a prachem
Předtím, než všichni opustili lesy a pole
a šli do davů na náměstích a obchodů a ulic.
Někde na východě.
A od té doby se mezitím
Hranice posunuly.
Lidé a místa
proklouzli trhlinami.
Byla válka a pak další:
strašidelné hranice,
obsazování, přesídlování a zúčtování
jako vrstvy mlhy.
Naposledy co moje rodina odešla
to bylo z Berlína, mince všité do kožichů.
Teď tam jsou jen otvory a díry, jako propáleniny od cigaret a rozbitá okna
do našeho rodokmenu.
Ohlédni se, podívej se zpět!
Otoč se a čel srdce své vlasti!
Je to stín za tebou?
Je to stín někoho, koho znáš?
TRANSLATION
My family can’t remember where it’s from.
It was one of those small towns,
The ones that stopped existing a long time ago:
Where there was only one well, nobody read,
Everybody farmed and married young.
This was back many generations, years
Before abandoning the woods and the fields
For crowds and squares and shops and streets.
Somewhere in the east.
Between now and then
Borders shifted.
People and places
slipped through the cracks. Then there was war, and another;
Ghostly borders, settling and resettling
Like lines of fog.
The last time they left
It was from Berlin, with coins sewed into fur coats.
Now there are holes like bullet holes or cigarette burns or broken windows
In the family tree.
Look left. Look back.
Turn and face the homeland’s heart. Is that a shadow behind you?
Is it the shadow of someone you know?
