Lots of us think of stress as a bad thing, and this might come as news… but a little bit of stress is good for you.

Short-term stress has been shown to improve alertness, boost memory and help us perform. But what might be a little bit for one person, might be a lot for someone else, and this is mostly down to their resilience.

Resilience is what helps us manage when we find ourselves in a stressful situation. Put simply, it’s our ability to cope with and recover from stress.

Resilience isn’t something we’re born with, it’s something we can develop over time. And by learning to understand your resilience and the areas you can improve, you can begin to take small steps to start building yours.

This Wednesday 10 of October is World Mental Health Day — a time for all of us to take a moment to think about how we can improve our mental health.

The Bank Workers Charity’s Resilience Check helps you find out how resilient you are, the areas you could improve and what you can do to build your own. It takes a couple of minutes and helps you learn how to respond to stress better.

And with four in five of us feeling stressed during a typical week, it might be nice to help your colleagues by sharing this post with them.
