Did you know that the TUC (Trade Union Congress) brings together 48 member unions, and collectively represents more than 5.5 million workers around the UK?

The purpose of the TUC is to use our collective strength to make the working world a better place for everyone. Accord became a TUC affiliate in 1996, and it’s been of great benefit to us and our members since then.

As part of our affiliation to the TUC, Accord is able to participate in national meetings and conferences. But that’s not all, we’re also able to put forward items of business which if adopted, become TUC policy. We call these motions.

Every year there’s a conference for each of the equality ‘strands’: Women, Disabled Workers, Black Workers, Young Workers, and LGBT+. In this article, I’ll focus on the Young Workers Conference.

The 2019 TUC Young Workers’ Conference is scheduled for Saturday 23rd to Sunday 24th March.

As with all TUC conferences, the number of delegates that a union can take is based on membership figures. For Accord, this means we’re entitled to take a maximum of 5 delegates and we can submit up to two motions (of no more than 250 words each).

Need help writing a motion? See our guide to TUC conference motions. You can also check out the agenda from the 2018 conference to see what issues were debated.

Key Dates: Young Workers Conference:

  • Friday 11 January 2019 — motions must be submitted by Accord before this date
  • Friday 1 February 2019 — last date for Accord to submit delegate names plus the preliminary agenda will be circulated to unions
  • Friday 15 February 2019 — deadline for submitting amendments to motions
  • Friday 8 March 2019 — the final agenda and additional documentation will be circulated to all delegates
  • Saturday 23rd March 2019 — conference begins

If you’re interested in attending the conference, or submitting an issue that would form the basis of a motion, contact us at equality@accordhq.org
