Day 1

Challenge: our team needs to build a social media platform within 10 days using Ruby on Rails (which we have never used before).

The team that accepts this challenge: Ammar, Antonio, Irfan, and Agnes

After our project kick-off this morning, we teamed up and looked at our learning objectives.

After completing the project setup requirements; i.e creating a GitHub repo, setting up our card wall on trello and starting a blog to document our journey, everyone took some time to dive into the Rails guide. Just so we know what we are dealing with… We’ve all found this super useful. Basically, it’s a rails tutorial that helps you set up a blog while explaining each step.

In the afternoon, we did our first stand up where we drew the diagram and had a look at Active Recorder which is quite handy when it comes to creating database structures.

Funnily enough our stand up turned into a retro and the takeaway is:

What went well?

  • nice app logo (designed by Irfan)
  • giving each other space to learn independently
  • setting up organisation profile on GitHub that makes Heroku deployment easier
  • everyone agreed that we’re a solid team with positive approach and good vibes.

What was meh?

  • understanding of Rails (well, it’s day 1, isn’t it?)
  • diagramming skills (seriously?!, it’s week 8)
  • we also need to find a balance between serious work and having fun, and tame our energy a little bit to be more efficient.

We also came up with a couple of personal goals for the next two weeks, and one thing that everyone has agreed on was to have a solid understanding of Rails by the end of this project.

Day one finished with an epic pingpong game that lasted for 6 minutes, included multiple balls and ignoring the table whatsoever.
