At Ace Tutors we want to help our students to feel as great about learning as we do about teaching, which is why we’ve compiled a list of our top 5 tips for how to Ace WACE.

1. Read through the syllabus! Most teachers will be able to supply you with a personalised copy of the syllabus that you are learning, but can also download a copy of your own from the ‘Syllabus and Support Materials’ section of the SCSA website. Simply follow this link, select the subject you are searching for and download the syllabus!

If you read through this document, you will find a point-by-point list of every topic covered in that subject over the course of the year.

Our top tip is to go through the syllabus point by point and cross each point off when you feel comfortable that you have fully revised it.

You’ll also notice a downloadable copy of the course glossary on this website which will help you discern all any confusing or ambiguous wording that you might have come across in class, or in the syllabus.

2. Take breaks! Studies suggest that the optimum technique is to study for 50 minutes and then take a 10 minute break.

Our top tip is to try to do something productive during your break such as walking your dog, making a snack or reading a book. Try to avoid doing things like watching TV, napping or using social media. Although these things might relax you, they actually hinder your productivity by making you feel even more tired. Try to pick a pastime that will keep you feeling energised!

3. Stay organised! When you’re stressed out, it’s easy to lose those few sheets of homework, or to just quickly save your notes somewhere on your computer without considering how you’ll ever find them again. However, this is going to make things much more frustrating for future you.

Our top tip is to always take those few extra minutes to make sure you have an organised file where you can clearly label each piece of work. This will make life much easier when you are revising and want to come back to an obscure fact that you learnt in the second week of term 1, trust us!

4. Do the homework! Doing your homework is the most straightforward method of revision. It helps you to make sure you have a firm grasp of the topic and allows you to raise any questions that you might have with your teacher early so that you can avoid realising that there is something you don’t understand the night before the exam.

Our top tip is to keep a diary or a calendar that you check regularly where you can write down when all of your homework is due so that you can make sure to stay on task.

5. Maintain a healthy lifestyle! When things get stressful it can be very tempting to turn to your favourite junk food to ease your sorrows, but in the long run this is likely to make studying even harder. Although junk food might provide you with a quick pick-me-up, it will also cause you to crash again faster, leading to fatigue, loss of focus and loss of concentration.

Our top tip it so to snack on slow energy releasing foods such as Greek yoghurt, bananas, almonds, apples and peanut butter. If you’re really craving a sweet treat, try to go for some dark chocolate which contains a number of vitamins and healthy antioxidants which in small doses can actually be good for you! Just try not to eat the whole block…!
