Every night, a small army of women dressed in dark-blue saris and orange high-visibility jackets, armed with broomsticks and dustpans, hit the streets of the South Indian city of Chennai to ensure the city is clean the next morning.

Ezhumalai hands over the duty to 66-year-old Chellappa after 12 hours of work at CPWD Quarters. He gulps down his lunch and walks to K.K. Clinic, which is a few streets away, so that he can start his duty there. With much difficulty he catches four hours of sleep during the wee hours.
