Stuck for what to do this wintry Melbourne weekend? We’ve got you covered with a bunch of fun and family-friendly activities.

1. Beat the winter blues at Family Sunday

Learning moving image technologies at Family Sunday

This month’s edition of our free Family Sundays series is all about winter fables. Really “let it go” with kid film anthems in kids’ karaoke, make a falling snowflake at the GIF station, watch all-day Pingu on the lightwell screen and voyage to faraway lands in the green screen studio.

The green screen activity is great for younger kids aged 3+, while the GIF station is ideal for kids 5–13. Karaoke is for the young and young at heart.

2. Play a game made by a game-changing woman at the Code Breakers exhibition

Got a kid who’s mad for video games? Maybe they’ve got a future career in coding. For many years, video games have been the domain of men and boys. The Code Breakers exhibition features 13 games by 10 exceptional women artists who are changing what the game landscape looks like. It’s great inspiration for getting young people into coding, design and storytelling.

Young game fans (5+) will enjoy the meditative style of The Gardens Between and the competition of Tricky Towers, while older kids will enjoy Ninja Pizza Girl and Armello.

3. Make a stop-motion at Wallace & Gromit and Friends

Calling all creative kids! After you’ve explored Aardman’s magical animation style at Wallace & Gromit and Friends, bring your inspiration into action by making your own stop-motion video. Experiment with making your own clay figures, then animate them using the stage sets in the studio space.

The stop-motion studio is great for kids aged 7–15, or 4–7 with adult help.
