Exploring Melbourne’s White Night

White Night is a collection of fantastic free events across our city, offering all types of experiences for everyone to enjoy.

Because the night is a blockbuster event, our very own intern Dustin has taken some time to pen down some key tips and hints for you! With the event this weekend, it’s time to start some serious planning.

When navigating through the intricate wilderness that is Melbourne CBD during White Night, there are many ways to reach all aspects of the diverse evening. With various cultural and landmark events that are not-to-be-missed, here are some tips and hints to help guide you in the survival of Melbourne premiere event!

1. Ensure you are well rested

Get some serious chill time in before the day. With the event running for twelve hours — Melbourne gets dialled up to a 10 on the night. The event sprawls across many inner suburbs and the city, so it’s vital to ensure that you’re fully hydrated and well rested to optimise the White Night experience. From the Arts Centre Melbourne’s ‘Convergence’ all the way up to Carlton Gardens, this year’s program is packed with many excellent activities. And the hugely popular Purple Rain is back! #whendovescry

2. Plan your event

Be sure to make use of the White Night Facebook, Website & Twitter when planning your evening as there is a lot on and it can be a bit overwhelming! Throughout the event there are also some really handy information points set up and White Night representatives are available to assist you with enquiries.

Next step is to excitedly traverse the terrain with a list of things you want to see and how to get there. In our Museum, we’ve brought back the ever popular competitive gaming in our Lightwell (not sorry if it ruins friendships, that’s on you guys), as well as vintage Australian cinema, and interactive artwork. You know, just in case you’ve not yet fully decided on what you want to do… Ultimately, it pays to make sure you know where you want to be, and leave some time for some exploring as well!

3. Don’t try and hit every landmark

As much as we would love for you to clock up the steps on your handheld pedometer, it’s more enjoyable if you search and wander through the city and the surrounds at a relaxed pace. Immerse yourself in the culture and the night life of Melbourne, rather than trying to see everything. Part of the fun is the journey and you might discover something else along the way!

4. Be Prepared

12 hours is a long time! Remember that one time you went for a long walk ‘just because’ — but forgot to take water and realised halfway through your phone had gone flat and you had forgotten your wallet to buy some water? What a disaster that was! You vowed ‘NEVER AGAIN!’ will you forget to be prepared.

White Night is wonderful, full of mesmeric light art, beautiful sounds, exhibitions, food and the best that Melbourne has to offer. Because of all the walking you’ll be doing, it’s good to:

- Have a fully charged phone before leaving

- Ensure to bring a bottle of water per-person

- Wear comfortable shoes!

- Smile! This night is for you.
