WI20 Member Spotlight 2: Shone Patil

Our communications director Vincent You sat down with Shone Patil, a member of ACM!

1) How long have you been a member of ACM?
I joined ACM at the start of fall quarter after attending their record breaking kickoff that packed PC.

2) What is a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me involves waking up relatively early and planning out the work I want to get done for the day. Following all the responsibilities I have to get through I like grabbing food with some friends and later chilling playing video games or watching a show.

3) What do you enjoy about ACM?
My favorite aspect of ACM is the diverse range of events that are hosted to help foster a community that anyone can be part of. It is managed efficiently and allows for easy networking for anyone looking to meet new people or learn about a multitude of topics.

4) What is the last book you read?
The last book I read was Exhalation by Ted Chiang.

5) How do you define success?
I define success as the point at which any person is able to say they enjoy what they do each day but still strive for new goals as they do so.

6) What’s your major, and what do you like about it?
My major is Data Science and I really like how flexible it is when applied to many facets of the world around us. It feels like the skills I’m learning could allow me to benefit to any field I decide to pursue. On top of that, UCSD has proven to give many resources to take on challenges in data science both in and out of the classroom and I am grateful for that.

7) Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In 5 years I see myself fulfilling the success metric I spoke of earlier, in that I’m simply proud and content with the way I’m changing the world. I don’t see the end of those 5 years as any end all be all, so I hope to partake in opportunities along the way that help me grow as a person.

8) Concluding thoughts?
In conclusion, I appreciate being able to do this interview and share my thoughts on a wide range of questions for others to think about. Also, go TSM!
