Across is taking center stage at the UMA booth this time for ETHGlobal Istanbul’s three-day hackathon, November 17–19, 2023. During this event, we invite attendees to build on Across in a new, upgraded way, which we are giving early access to for ETHGlobal hackers!

As the leading cross-chain token bridge, we are introducing a protocol upgrade called “Composable Bridging,” which demonstrates itself as the key building block for the future of interoperability. This newly added feature extends our intents-based bridge design to the developer community and offers the Across value proposition of incredibly fast cross-chain transfer speeds and competitive pricing. We are so excited to give hackers a sneak peek of this update at this weekend’s event and cannot wait to see what amazing innovation you will bring to cross-chain interop.

Composable bridging allows developers to bundle bridge transactions with contract level functions to improve the onboarding experience for multichain or L2-native projects.

Hackathon Details

Across is not only secured by UMA Protocol — They are also sister organizations! So, if you’re wondering where to find Across at the hackathon, you can meet our team at the UMA booth, where they’ll be happy to answer any of your questions on Across, Composable Bridging, or anything UMA related as well. Make sure not to miss out on scoring some of our brand new merch too!

To showcase our new feature to hackers, we invite you to join our workshop in Workshop Room 1 at 2:00 PM (Friday, Nov 17). Across Smart Contract Engineer, Paul, who you may know as Dxe in our Discord, will be presenting a high level and in-depth technical overview on Composable Bridging.

Now for the fun part — Across, on behalf of UMA, is allocating $10,000 in prizes as part of this year’s ETHGlobal Istanbul’s massive $600,000 pool. Our full prize breakdown is as follows:

🥇 First place: $5,000

🥈 Second place: $2,000

🥉 Third place: $1,000 x3

What is Composable Bridging?

To give you a bit of a head’s up before the hackathon starts, let’s go over a quick rundown of what to expect from the new Across Protocol extension.

Composable Bridging allows hackers to embed Across’ highly cost efficient, low latency transfers and bundle this with a composable destination chain action message, directly within their app. The possibilities of composable bridging are unbounded, so the sky’s the limit — but don’t worry, we still got an idea’s bank for you down below.

Composable Bridging is a secure, elegant way to push the boundaries of interoperability, but to put it more simply, it allows you to bundle cross-chain token transfers with whatever action you’d like tokens to take on your protocol. Think of it as an all in one: bridge + action!

The possibilities presented by Composable Bridging are boundless and the feature offers added security by binding destination chain instructions to the value of the origin chain tokens being transferred.

This may look simple enough, but it is an extremely powerful way to onboard users to a new chain, without them technically having to interact with the native ecosystem you’re building on. This reduces a lot of the onboarding friction we see for L2 projects today, since it removes a lot (if not all) of the learning curve surrounding token bridging and familiarizing oneself with new blockchains or rollups.

Composable Bridging is the key interoperability building block, without the security tradeoffs. When integrating this feature into your dapp, cross-chain transfers and the instructions you bundle to the transfer to, are bound to the value of the tokens. So, instructions are secured by binding the value to the origin chain transfer amount. Additionally, providing instructions only for what to do with the tokens on the destination chain, enhances security by minimizing scope and doesn’t add any trust assumptions.

Ideas Bank

  • Cross Chain Auctions
  • Receive destination gas token with transfer: Bridge an ERC-20 and then swap a portion of it on the destination chain into the destination chain’s native gas token.
  • Relayer auctions + guaranteed right to fill
  • Enter into lending or borrow position from any chain: Bridge 1 ETH from mainnet to Arbitrum (e.g) and then supply into Aave’s ETH market, send resulting aTokens to user’s EOA on Arbitrum.
  • Provide liquidity to AMM from any chain: Bridge 1 ETH from from mainnet to Optimism, swap 0.5 ETH to 1000 USDC on Optimism, deposit 0.5 ETH and 1000 USDC into Uniswap WETH/USDC pool.
  • Bridge + buy an NFT from any chain
  • Place a bet from any chain
  • Cross-chain Zapier / Zapper

We hope that some of these options offer you the inspiration to include Across Composable Bridging in your next big idea and look forward to meeting all of the hackers in Istanbul!
