ENJOYING the Act of Learning : Post-Its Edition
Intended Audience:
Previous ideas: Is this for the CMU student body? All of Pittsburgh?
Involving the professors would be important if we go along with the idea of making something for the student body. We want all levels to be involved. It’s sort of a two way street.
We want to keep it as open as we want. Although we may intend for it to be for the student body or our campus, it’s really meant for anyone who comes by (ex: if this were an installment on the sidewalk). Anyone can enjoy the act of learning.
- Most immediate impact: Students + Faculty + Staff
- Visitors (seniors, high school students etc.), anyone traveling through
We feel like we have a topic that really applies to everyone.
What’s the takeaway we want people to get?
We thought about how people said that the act of learning is something you do yourself, when you’re alone. It’s not for an assignment. It’s not for others. It’s for yourself.
Lots of people coming into Carnegie Mellon had their own passions and interests — things that made them stand out. Of course over time, while being a student here, we kind of learn to put those interests aside. This is not by choice. We sort of have to because we spend our waking hours pouring energy into our school work and then at the end of the day — usually when people would think or leave time to do things for themselves — we’re so exhausted that we just want to go to bed. Or hang out with friends.
For myself, I like sneakers. I like drawing sneakers. My resolution always is to draw a sneaker a day. But I can’t keep up with my promise. I never have time and that sounds like a lame excuse but really, things are so demanding around here, I put my own passions at the bottom of my priorities. That’s not good. That’s something that many students around here can relate to. And I’d like to find out how we can remind students and faculty and whoever it is that’s walking by, to take time out of their day to do something alone. I feel like we are also so connected to social media these days, we rarely get to sit down and read a book, watch a movie alone, get your favorite food alone, etc. I’d like to bring that back and make people aware how important it is to find happiness within yourself.
We want to inspire people to get back into what they really loved.
Physical/Experiential Aspect — Walking through some sort of public installment on campus. Idea: Tunnel that immerses people in our topic that’s built around the Randy Pausch Bridge. They can hear audio, watch video clips, etc and then hopefully at the end contribute their own aspect to it.
Print: We want to distribute a variety of promotional and print materials across campus in the medium (ie: stickers, posters, and other 2D media).
Digital: Video! We don’t want this to be a corporate promotional video. This will not be an ad. We want to interview students. Ask them what they do, their passions etc.
How could someone record their own voice and add it to our project? Or film a bit of them talking? How do we make one website where all these interactive bits can get merged and accumulated?
