It’s that time of year again: Flyover Fest is back! One of Iowa City’s most beloved festivals has returned and its line-up isn’t pulling any punches. From sex-positive rapper CupcakKe to Black Panther’s production designer Hannah Bleacher, Flyover Fest 2018 has it all. The festival will be held April 27th and 28th in downtown Iowa City. This week, I spoke with Flyover’s Chief Connector and Event Producer, Simeon Talley, about how Flyover has evolved over the years and why this year’s festival is one for the history books.

A Brief History of Flyover

In 2015, Simeon founded the Iowa Fashion Project (IFP) in Iowa City. IFP sought to connect designers in Iowa with the goal of amplifying and improving the Midwestern fashion scene. In 2016, IFP hosted the Flyover Fashion Fest to promote local fashion designers. When asked why he originally created the Iowa Fashion Project, Simeon said:

Iowa Fashion Project was an effort to connect, grow and elevate Iowa’s fashion community. We started it as a way to change the perception of what’s possible in the state of Iowa.

After the 2016 fashion festival, Iowa Fashion Project morphed into the larger organization known today as Flyover. Flyover seeks to celebrate diversity in all aspects of our society. It has expanded beyond fashion to include art, writing, politics, culture, and more. Per their website, Flyover’s main goal is to “take the under out of representation” by showcasing work done by creatives who celebrate diversity.

About Flyover Fest

To accomplish this goal, Flyover produces Flyover Fest, an annual showcase of authors, artists, designers, musicians, and pundits from many different backgrounds. The festival hopes to “explore what a more equitable, inclusive and representative future should look like through fashion, art, performance and discussion.”

Why should you attend Flyover Fest? If you have passion for bringing about greater inclusion and representation or learning about contemporary culture and art, this is the festival for you! Festival participants will be able to hear many incredible speakers discuss topics including, but not limited to:

  • Sex positivity
  • Diversity and representation in Hollywood
  • LGBTQ activism
  • Body positivity
  • The Black experience in the United States
  • Drag culture
  • Political engagement
