“YOU HAVE BUSINESS, WE HAVE THE EYE”

Our Experience as a Student-Led agency

Student-led advertising & PR agencies have become an integral part of the advertising curriculum at universities across the country. The real-world, tangible experience competes with the accustomed internship in a variety of ways that have students jumping at the opportunity to join. Student-led agencies giving us a chance to apply everything we’ve just learned in the classroom in a tangible way for real clients with real money.

“The [student] agency replaces the old-fashioned ‘read a book, listen to a lecture and take a test’ model of learning with real-world clients and situations, marketplace challenges, fast deadlines and no easy answers.” - Doug Swanson

The Professor & Head of Advertising and Public Relations Lab, Tsakarestou Betty (Betty Tsakarestou) and her collaborators supervised each laboratory course. In the beginning of the Semester each team created a start-up agency and ran the business as if we were in the marketplace. Started our social media campaigns and created a website. During the semester different projects came along and each agency had to carry through with them. We had to take different roles and projects as marketers/advertisers, as an advertising agency, as mobile app creators and as UX heuristics reviewers.

The rise of student ad agencies across college is a positive addition to a long-standing advertising curriculum. The lessons learned, experiences made and connections built provide students with a new age form of agency trial and error. Outside of the wisdom gained from participating in a student-led agency, portfolio enhancement provides students with a unique new advantage on the job market.

As Marketers & Advertising Agency

Other-View’s first big project. Costa coffee project! Costa coffee is a British coffeehouse chain, founded in London in 1971 by Sergio & Bruno who had great desire to make great tasting coffee a part of everyday life. If you ask, we think that they succeeded.

Costa coffee has a presence in Greece but not as powerful as they would like. Somewhere here our agency appears. Lab team & Costa coffee team gave us a marketing and advertising brief. In the advertising brief, there is a brief history of the product that is to be advertised (Costa coffee). You should know that the advertising brief is the beginning point of work that the agency’s account management group undertakes. The Purpose, Strategy, Intention, Background Overview, Objectives and Target audience were elaborated.

So, Here we come!

We started with extensive research in order to get to know the product, its presence, its audience etc. The research methodology was mixed. We conducted a qualitative study made up of an online focus group and in depth interviews, in parallel with a quantitative online survey. Afterward, we did another research about Costa coffee’s top three competitors in the Greek market. Competition analysis helps you find new ways to differentiate, meet customer needs, and ultimately deliver a better product. Researching and evaluating competitors is an essential skill for any product manager. Competitive research is a key step in the strategic planning process. You need to know where your product fits in the market and what opportunities exist before you can set goals and prioritize what to build next. This research together with a Swot Analysis helped us confirm our competitive differentiation — the unique value we offer and how Costa coffee stands out from others like it.

Subsequently, we talked about the Marketing mix of the product (i. Product & Packaging, ii. Price, iii. Place, iv. Communication Strategy). Those tactical marketing tools are everything a company can do to influence demand for its product. Later on, we set our target group and we announced the Big Idea.

We had four scenarios of everyday life struggles. Don’t question yourselves. Costa coffee was in every single one of them to “solve the problem”.

Last but not least, we made a social media campaign because digital advertising is important too.

Have you ever double-tapped an image on Instagram or reacted to a video on Facebook only to realize afterward that it was actually an ad?

More than ever, ads can be contextual, relevant, targeted, and helpful in ways they never could before. In short, ads today are content.

But what we wanted?

  1. An increase in brand awareness
  2. A better understanding of our audiences
  3. Build engagement & community with the consumers
  4. The creation of higher-performing content
  5. Become a loved coffee brand

As mobile app creators

Apps are everywhere these days. In fact, we’re now entering into the application economy, the name given to the massive boom surrounding mobile apps and the way they’re changing how business works. Most businesses now have an app for their service.

The gaming app industry is also a massive economy. Marketers can use quizzes for instance to communicate with their audience.

Why do we choose quizzes?

1. Quizzes help you learn!

We all love to fill our brains with exciting Facts. Even if you think you know everything about a certain subject, like history, geography, a movie or a series, there might be some questions that trip you up. Quizzes can help you fill the gaps in stuff you know!

2. They are Fun!

Quizzes are a fantastic way to stretch your head muscle and apply some of your random bits of knowledge to a game. That’s all the quizzes are: a game! And who doesn’t like playing games?

3. Quizzes are a great way to relax!

There’s a lot going on in the outside world, isn’t there? Grab your device and spend some quality time with a wide range of quizzes.

The Other-View team got creative and made three different Quizzes:

Nikos Chalkias — “Frozen Edition, Quiz

It’s no secret that I love Disney World! Disney is not something you “outgrow”. It is the Happiest Place for children, teens, adults, seniors and everyone in between. The “real world” can be draining and stressful. Disney and its movies are the perfect escape!

We can’t let it go: There’s no doubt that Frozen has made a lasting impression with kids, teens and adults all over the world. In case you’ve somehow missed it, Frozen is inspired by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen’s fairytale The Snow Queen. Possessing the power to turn anything to ice or snow, Princess Elsa flees to the North Mountain, where she inadvertently engulfs her own kingdom in a frosty eternal winter. This prompts her sister Anna to set out to find her, with the help of an ice harvester, his reindeer and a friendly snowman.

The utter joy of Frozen is that it behaves like a classic fairytale but then bends all the rules. I think we all learnt some life lessons from Frozen.

If you think that you are a true fan of Frozen, try your hand at taking my Quiz!

Ioanna-Irene Bampouri “World Geography Games

Geography helps in understanding the vast diversity in cultures, political structures, economics, landscapes, and habitats around the world, as well as the connection between them. A geography quiz enables us to explore and understand space and location.

People have the chance to develop a variety of abilities while studying geography through a quiz, some of which are broader. These abilities work well together to create a solid foundation for employment, lifelong learning, and making a positive impact on the world. Moreover, a geography quiz can help you develop a variety of subject — specific abilities, such as the ability to create compelling maps, diagrams, and visualizations, as well as the ability to perform fieldwork and gather field data.

Geography can develop various skills, including improved empathy and insight, the capacity to act responsibly and ethically, and a flexible and inventive approach to problem-solving.

How well-versed are you in European and Greek geography? You have to identify them all in this quiz!

Mary Papalani — “Solar System, Quiz

Our Solar System

Name: There are many planetary systems like ours in the universe, with planets orbiting a host star. Our planetary system is called “The Solar System” because we use the word “solar” to describe things related to our star, after the Latin word for Sun, “Solis”.

Our planetary system is located in an outer spiral arm of the Milky Way galaxy and consists of our star, the Sun, and everything bound to it by gravity-the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune; dwarf planets such as Pluto; dozens of moons; and millions of steroids, comets, and meteoroids.

From the innermost planet, Mercury, to the farthest reaching planet, Neptune, the Solar System is filled with fascinating wonders and mysteries. Its composition of planets, moons, asteroids, and comets has been studied and explored for centuries, and continues to be a source of wonder and fascination.

Our solar system continues to reveal amazing facts and inspire some out-of-this-world fantasy. Take this quiz to find out how much you know and what you’re missing!

All quizzes created with proto.io a no-code online tool that utilizes a drag and drop user interface (UI) and offers a range of templates, as well as a list of possible events and interactions.

As UX heuristics reviewers

UX review is a comprehensive analysis based on select user experience and usability research methods. It is performed in order to find issues within an app or product that can cause a range of problems.

In collaboration with Antonis Bribas (UX Research & Designer) and Dr. Panagiotis Zacharias (Founder/ Lead UX Researcher of @theUXProdigy), we were invited as an agency to perform our own Usability/UX Reviews on an App of our choice.

The app: ZARA

First of all, we gathered information about the brand, the company and its own goals. ZARA is a Spanish apparel brand. It belongs to Inditex, one of the largest fashion retailers around the globe. Zara is known for its fast-fashion and includes clothing, shoes, accessories, fragrances and beauty. It currently has more than 2,000 stores around the globe and is the most significant contributor to the Inditex group.

Later on, we created a proto-persona with some basic characteristics, such as name, demographics, behaviors, needs and goals. A proto-persona is a fictional character which represents each app’s target users. Personas are an extremely valuable UX tool, allowing us to understand our target audience and make design decisions accordingly.

A UX App review should be based on Jakob Nielsen’s 10 Usability heuristics. Heuristics provide general guidelines that UI designers can reference to perform usability audits on their projects. The heuristic evaluation is really effective.

The three tasks that we evaluated:

1. Sign-Up

Checking the whole process of subscription step by step and found out that it is accessible and easy to create a personal account. Zara’s app has buttons for each movement in the navigation, in order to help the user.

2. Menu

The choices and the categories are visible enough overall and the user’s experience is easy. However, we noticed some errors. For instance, there is no ‘help’ button in some cases and is a bit misleading for the user.

3. Payment

Finally, we checked out the payment process and we found out that it is the easiest way to pay with any credit card you want, as Zara’s system is quite developed.

The application’s system is visible and understandable for users. There are so many instructions and information about the efficient navigation and it uses functions that prevent users from possible mistakes. On the other hand, we ended up that this fashion app focuses more on the design , rather than the usability. Some of the buttons may be misleading and the help center of the application can be improved even more.

Other-View is a brand new agency. We worked with no-profit clients creating and producing advertising, marketing, and graphic design work. All these projects offered us one of a kind experiences. Looking forward to next semester’s projects!

Until then, the Other-View team wishes you all the best!
