The Most Loved By Programmers (Shortcuts!)

In a recent tweet, Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft Senior Program Manager( Team insider Program) shared a list of the most loved… shortcuts by programmers:

Almost certainly, especially if you are a genius of the data-processing, a cyber addict or, simply, a computer fancier (we don’t like the “nerd” word), when you read the beginning of this article title, your thoughts must have been like these:

Although it is less enjoyable than watching TV series, the use of shortcuts presents a wide spectrum of potentialities: it can increase your productivity, reduce significantly the time wasted and allow to keep your concentration. For example, to copy text, you can highlight text and press the Ctrl+C shortcut. The shortcut is faster than moving your hands from the keyboard, highlighting with the mouse, choosing copy from the file menu, and then returning to the keyboard. A clear definition of shortcuts is provided by Wikipedia:

“ A keyboard shortcut is a sequence or combination of keystrokes on a computer keyboard which invokes commands in software”

In this article we would like to focus in Atom keyboard shortcuts. Atom is an open-source code editor released and maintained by the GitHub team. Thanks to its simplicity and practicability, it has become the favorite code editor of many developers. Despite its wide use, lot of the users take the long way around to write code because they ignore the true potentials of this editor, shortcuts included.

In the following image, some Atom shortcuts are reported in order to improve your workflow.

From the table above, it is possible to observe that a determined operation can be fastly reached by typing a determinate and simple commands.

In conclusion, the use of shortcuts in Atom, and in general in all applications, allow work quality improvements leading to increase developers productivity by 146% (1).
