The Diabetic Cyborg Life 04/11: Antebellum America: the GOP/Trump’s Ideal Society
Much of my graduate and undergraduate life was spent studying this period after the American Revolution and before the Civil War. It seems after the rolling back of rights after Roe’s ousting, they desire to throw out the whole 20th and much of the 19th centuries. The originalists are all too happy to play along with taking America back to, not only before women could vote, but before it was illegal to own people.
If Trump/GOP win in 2024, I would bet on when they repeal the Emancipation Proclamation and the Thirteenth Amendment. Pro Southern history buffs like to point out that that action only banned slavery in Confederate warring occupied territories. They rarely mention that it was already banned in many of the Union states, barring the few places that did not ban it before the 13th amendment. It was almost impossible to own slaves since they could easily escape into Union hands and be freed after Emanation.
Trump/GOP are looking to ignore the rights of the last 200+ years and we can stand for that as a society.
The issue is, if common law that governs our nation can allow for Jim Crow and other laws avoiding state laws, can it too account for making state laws that ignore the unjust and unAmerican laws that might follow?
