Sorrento sunsets were so incredible. Fiery and bold, they were the perfect backdrops to this romantic cliff side town. We were lucky enough to enjoy a few sunsets from one of the best views in town at Hotel Ambasciatori thanks to our newlywed friends, Katie and Rick.

Yes… we met again because, well, we had so much fun together! Fortunately, our schedules aligned and we were able to spend some more time exploring the new town of Sorrento. Eddy and I booked a hotel located outside the center of town which felt odd after staying only in Air B & Bs for weeks. We were situated near a bus route that headed straight into town and access was easy. It was easy as far as distance from door to door, but not pertaining to safety. The winding two-lane road that lead to the center of town allowed for crazy Italian motorists to push the speed limit and their luck.

The food scene in Sorrento provided a decent mix of traditional Italian cuisine infused with seafood. Antico Francischiello was our favorite restaurant situated across the street from our hotel. It was convenient, delicious, and had a wonderful view of the sunset. Other memorable dinners were spent with our newlywed friends and often included a central location, great Italian pasta/pizza, live singers and plenty of wine.

After we said goodbye to our friends, Eddy and I decided to visit the island of Capri on a day trip. Truly, we could have spent several days there. We boated around the island; Eddy swam, we explored the Green Grotto (not Blue Grotto) and then we were let loose on the island. We had the bright idea to walk to Anacapri where a chairlift will take visitors to the highest peak on the island. I had no idea I signed up to climb the steep 921 Phoenician Steps. I nearly fainted half way up while Eddy sprinted to the top. However, the views along the way were very much worth the sweat as were the views from the chairlift in Anacapri. As we were warned, our boat did not wait for us when it was time to leave. Eddy thought he could call their bluff and pushed returning to the dock until the very last minute. This resulted in both of us having to jump from the pier onto the moving boat.

Another great adventure was our trip to Pompeii. The first thing I noticed was the stellar location of this ancient city. The view of Mount Vesuvius was spectacular as was the thought of it erupting some time in the near future (last was 1944). The most interesting items in this “city of the dead” were the moldings of some corpses from the eruption of AD79. Although only moldings, they perfectly depicted the last moments of Pompeii civilians before being suffocated by the Mount Vesuvius eruption. We explored the amphitheater, village, restaurants, bathhouse, brothel, and more. This ancient civilization really did impress us; the technology was remarkable. We learned they enjoyed entertainment, wine, fast food and sex. It proved to us that humans really haven’t changed all that much in 2,000 years.

Sorrento was good to us and a good appetizer for the main dish of our next stop: the Amalfi Coast.

Ciao bella,
