Cambridge, Year Three

Here we go again…

I’m back in Cambridge for my third (and probably final) year. I’ve been here less than two weeks and already had 25 lectures, written a proposal for my dissertation and given a tech talk for a company I interned with. Guess this year’s not going to be any more relaxed than the previous ones then…

If you’re confused already, let’s start over. I’m Alastair. I’m studying Computer Science at Downing College. I wrote about some of my previous escapades at university here, before I came to terms with the fact that Tumblr is a really terrible place for a blog containing long and/or technical articles, and various circumstances meant that the whole blogging about Cambridge thing was a bit of a failure. So this is a fresh new blog for me to write about stuff which don’t have any other home.

As I mentioned, this is my third year, also known as Part II (because Cambridge). At the end of the year I’ll be taking three exam papers on topics ranging from Natural Language Processing and Quantum Computing to Advanced Graphics and Computer Vision. Unique to this year is the Part II project, wherein I have to produce an original piece of software over the course of several months and write an extensive dissertation about it. My project is in 3D graphics and I think it should be quite fun to work on. It’s a nice change to be working on something directly related to my interests as part of my course.

This year will be my last chance to make the most of the opportunities university has to offer. I’m hoping to get a bit more involved than I’ve been able to in previous years, but balancing work and free time at Cambridge is notoriously difficult, so we’ll see how that goes. In any case Cambridge never ceases to be interesting, and whatever I get up to I’ll try to share some of it here. In addition to that, this will be the place to discuss any tech projects that I’m working on. So follow me for some cool stuff about Cambridge and about computers. Maybe. Idk.
