Living a neurodivergent life is akin to being the protagonist in a one-of-a-kind film, where your brain assumes the role of the director, and traditional time management and organizational charts are merely suggestions. Welcome to our community, where executive challenges are not hurdles but unexpected plot twists in our journey toward success. Let’s explore the three main challenges: time management, organizing chaos, and task prioritization. And, of course, I’ll provide some ‘cheat codes’ for mastering this game.

1. Time Management: Not Just a Fancy Planner

For us neurodivergent folks, managing time is less about fancy color-coded schedules and more about feeling the rhythm. Most people naturally follow a schedule, like they’re born with an internal clock. Us? We’re more like we’re surfing with a blindfold. This can be explained by our brains being constantly active and hosting an everyday thought party.

Enter ‘dopamine mapping’ — a technique that involves identifying activities that light up our brains with dopamine (that feel-good buzz) and strategically sprinkling them throughout our day. It’s like setting up snack stations at the party to keep the vibe just right. By curating your day with a playlist of these dopamine-inducing activities, you can get a better grip on time and keep the overwhelm at bay.

2. The Art of Sorting Chaos

Ever look at your to-do list and think everything screams priority? That’s our passionate neurodivergent selves talking, where urgency is more about feeling than fact. The solution? Name-dropping our thoughts and feelings into a brainstorming session with another human who thinks like us. It’s like giving a microphone to the thoughts bouncing around in our head, letting them have their solo before they harmonize. This daily brain dump clears the stage and helps spotlight the real headliners among our tasks. For example, a task you thought was urgent can wait, while another task you didn’t know was necessary is a top priority.

When we share our thoughts with someone else, they come into focus on a good day without their input. On those really chaotic days, they can give voice to our priorities and help us see what is next. This act of sharing can bring a profound sense of relief, knowing that we are not alone in our struggles and that there are people who understand and support us. It’s a reminder that we’re part of a community, all navigating similar challenges.

3. The Sandwich Technique: Layering Tasks with Flavor

After our tasks are lined up like eager auditionees, it’s time for the ‘Sandwich Technique.’ This technique involves alternating between ‘feel-good’ tasks and ‘meh’ tasks, with a dash of dopamine (that feel-good buzz) after each task to keep the energy and burnout down. It’s like crafting the perfect sandwich to feast on throughout the day. Using a timer to carve out mini-acts for each task can help keep the show running smoothly without overdoing any scene.

Final Curtain Call:

Being neurodivergent means navigating a world that’s not always tailored to our unique abilities. However, armed with these practical strategies — dopamine mapping, brainstorming our way through the chaos, and the sandwich technique — we’re not just managing; we’re taking control of our own success. I am living proof that implementing these strategies daily can lead to success!
