Data. Privacy. Encryption. Words that have flooded many conversations on the internet landscape, especially in the last few months. As podcasters (and internet users yourselves), your concerns around online security are probably growing. Apple has concerns too, prompting the podcast platform giant to announce a new secure RSS feed policy.

So, what’s this all about?

Late last month, Apple informed all podcasters that in the future a “secure podcaster feed with an SSL certificate” will be required to submit new podcasts and to access Podcast Analytics. SSL is a security protocol used to secure data between two machines using encryption. Millions of websites already use this encryption to keep its user data safe (very important these days). Basically, it’s any website that starts with “HTTPS://”.

You’re probably asking, “is my feed is secure?”. If you’re one of our partners hosting with Megaphone, we have some good news. The hosting platform has already hooked you up with a secure RSS using an SSL certificate. You can rest easy.

Not on Megaphone? Talk to us today about hosting with Megaphone. Not only will your feed be up-to-date with Apple’s policies, but there are a ton more benefits to consider. Monetize your back catalog, get real-time performance analytics, and distribute your pod far and wide — all with an easy-to-use interface and on-call support.

Apple’s memo suggests podcasts without this prefix may be dropped, so if you do not have an HTTPS feed, now’s the time to make the switch. Dan Misener of Pacific Content notes that only 17% of podcasts are ready for this change. You should check out his post, which offers additional resources to make sure you’re compliant.
