Ready to get your summer on? We definitely are, so we’re declaring this season the summer of female voices. There’s an ever-expanding world of empowering, funny, and smart female podcasters out there waiting to be heard. We’re definitely inspired by the latest release of pods, like Gimlet’s Sandra and How it is from Reese Witherspoon’s production company. If we’re being honest, women have a knack for connecting with audiences and we love all the female voices coming out and sharing their stories.

Historically, women have been underrepresented in media. Among the top 250 grossing films, women made up 18% of directors, writers, producers, editors, and cinematographers according to the 2017 Celluloid Ceiling Report.

Podcasting, however, is making some progress. Just over a third of podcasts in iTunes are led by females and a growing contingent of them are taking on production and leadership roles in the industry. Listening is diversifying as well. The 2018 Infinite Dial is finally showing signs of a closing gender gap, with 24% of women now listening monthly, up from 21% in 2017, while the percentage of men has stayed flat.

This is still an underserved market, and there’s massive opportunity to meet the growing demand from listeners and advertisers who are hungry for more of this content.

Women are power consumers and wield a huge chunk of the world’s wealth (30% to be exact). Podcasting offers brands one-to-one engagement in an opt-in environment. In other words, it’s really, really effective.

cabana happens to be home to a wide-range of podcasts that span genres and goes beyond female-centric topics. These podcasters can get real about finances, debate about sports, tell crude jokes, and much more.

This is a matter close to our hearts. We are a team of women, after all! Here are few of their favorite female voices, and why you should hear them out.

Crime Junkie

Ready for your next binge true crime lovers? Then you need to get to know the Crime Junkies Ashley Flowers and Brit. Each episode sheds light on a unique, well-researched case leaving no stone left unturned. It’s like you’re investigating alongside them! Plus, Ashley is on the board of Crime Stoppers and Brit worked for a P.I, how cool is that? Sadly, most crime happens to women, but these ladies encourage their listeners to stay vigilant by sharing the victim’s stories.

One Part Podcast

I started listening to One Part Podcast in 2016 and I was an instant fan after one episode. It’s part of my weekly self-care routine! I always discover something new from her show, whether it’s a wellness brand, plant-based recipe, or a different perspective on a topic that affects women. Jessica’s interviews get real and are often conversations that not a lot of women are having but SHOULD be having more — it really is inspiring!

Chicken Soup for the Soul Podcast with Amy Newmark

When I heard we would be working with Chicken Soup for the Soul, my inner smile was so big my cheeks hurt (if that’s possible). One of my favorite things to do with my son in grade school was to read to him GREEN SALAMI from Chicken Soup for Kid’s Soul before bedtime. Yes, I even read it to him the night before he left for college!

Amy Newmark offers guidance from the women who influence our lives in a positive way by sharing real stories about how we as women feel, think, live, and work. This podcast allows me to feel and offers something for everyone.

So Money with Farnoosh Torabi

I am all about catching every episode of So Money with Farnoosh Torabi these days! My daughter is a senior in high school, so making sure I am maximizing every dollar in as many ways as possible is my primary focus — college is expensive and I want us both to take on as little debt as possible over the course of these next 4 years. Farnoosh (and her guests) always provide solid tips that I can use in my everyday life that make me feel more financially savvy. As a single mom, it’s empowering!

Annie — Manager, Marketing Solutions
Kill Me Now

Judy is not afraid to get angry with her guests (which include comedic powerhouses Amy Schumer and Janeane Garofalo, BTW). Her rants are not just hilarious, they are totally relatable and speak the truth. In a male-dominated comedy world, Judy is unapologetic and takes no prisoners — I’m definitely here for it!

I Seem Fun: The Diary of Jen Kirkman Podcast

I Seem Fun is a go-to podcast to get your laughs in. Totally relatable for the struggles & awkward moments of young adult life. Jen Kirkman, though often without a filter, says what many of us are thinking. She is perfect for those who don’t like to take themselves too seriously.

Little Known Facts

Ilana’s uncanny ability to get her guests to open up might as well be a superpower — and her guests are impressive. Ben Platt, Julianne Moore, and Jason Alexander are just a few who have sat in her studio recently, revealing the private side of their very public lives. Each interview makes me feel like I’m a fly on the wall listening in on an intimate chat between old friends.
