Lebron James is known as arguably the greatest basketball player alive and in Akron, Ohio, his legend is even bigger. However, it doesn’t just end at basketball.

James helped create the “I Promise School,” a public school for at-risk students in his hometown of Akron, which opened this summer with 240 third and fourth-graders in its initial class. James was an at-risk youth himself. He missed large chunks of school days in elementary school, so he was motivated to help kids facing similar situations as he did growing up.

The “I Promise School” is a part of Akron Public Schools, but is not like other public schools in the area. James’ school has a daily schedule that runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with the school year running from July to May. A few things that really make the school special are the additional programs offered including social and emotional learning as well as a supportive circle. The students are also provided with free breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks.

James will cover full tuition to the University of Akron for students who successfully graduate from his school. The school will also offer assistance with job placement as well as GED classes for parents of the children. James’ impact in basketball in the Ohio area has been well documented and now his impact in the community is just as well documented.
