As lockdown progressed, so did Alex’s feeling of desolation.

Lost in thought, he stared out the window.

The empty street was a ghost town, apart from stray dogs.

The dark blue sky descended.

“Are you OK?”

Jessica watched as he grew more despondent daily.

Losing his job wasn’t just about poverty, but self-respect.

She also felt the brunt of the pandemic.

Their relationship had recently become strained.

Their world was silenced.

“I can’t carry on like this any longer.”

“Hope is lost — there is nothing!”

“Don’t we count, Alex?
