Woodcutters Never Sleep

A Poem of Hope

A tree stands
at the eastern corner
where the sun rises
where there is hope.
Her shadow is democracy itself.
Her branches
extends west — even to the seas.
And at night
She is refuge for all.

This tree stands
at the eastern corner
like the child of the sun.
She is fruitful all year round
and even insects have their fill
so woodcutters are provoked
by such inclusivities.

This eastern corner tree
has been kind for generations:
When there is no sunshine
She is the sun
where there is hunger
She is food.

This tree stands,
clouds above her head
fire around her roots
Innocent blood drenching her truck
worms in the soil she stands in.
Yet, she stands even taller.
By her, the sun and the sky are touched:
The world that we want,
The laughter of our children,
The calm of the elders,
the demise of hate,
the love of love
of rainbows…
