The fifth season of the award-winning Latin American documentary podcast is produced and distributed by Adonde Media

As we explored the types of original projects Adonde Media would bring to the world, I always considered Las Raras as the prime example of what we would want to create. From the moment I first heard it, I was blown away by the attention to detail, the beautiful sound design and soundscapes, and the dedication to telling intimate stories of freedom from a continent that so desperately needs them to be told.

So it is with great pleasure and pride that we announce Las Raras is now an Adonde Media Original, the first in a slate of original shows we will be releasing over the next year.

Starting October 15th, the 5th season of Las Raras features some of the best audio storytellers in the Spanish language. Over six highly crafted episodes released bi-weekly, we will take you to Buenos Aires, Madrid, Bogotá, Mexico City, San Francisco and Santiago de Chile, to hear from people who are breaking with the status quo in very public and also intimate ways, all while in the midst of this global pandemic.

This marks a new path for Adonde into producing original work. To date, we have proudly made chart-topping and innovative podcasts with a diverse array of partners, such as the Duolingo Spanish, Duolingo French, and TED en Español podcasts. We innovated in bilingual production with Vice News to make El Chapo: El jefe y su juicio, and helped create a unique interview experience with Spotify’s Lado BB. Most recently, we partnered again with Duolingo to make Relatos en inglés, which hit number one in every single Latin American country, and we truly went around the globe to tell stories of women peacebuilders in season two of Seeking Peace with Georgetown University in collaboration with UN Women.

We will continue to seek out ambitious clients who want to break down barriers to new audiences with us by exploring the full potential of narrative audio storytelling, while our originals will be our contribution to further exploring the robust stories we’d like to see in the world.

Baked into Adonde’s very name is that quest: ¿Adónde? “Where to?” Where can we go with our approach to audio storytelling so that we continue to break barriers to new audiences? How can we further bridge the barrier of language to reach audiences that we haven’t quite reached yet as an industry? How can we innovate in form and genre, or even distribution, to bring more people into this beautiful medium? There is still a vast amount of un-chartered territory in our industry to explore.

For example, the recent Edison Research study, that Adonde Media collaborated on funding, revealed that 25% of U.S. Latinos listen to podcasts, with a great majority of listeners saying they feel more connected to hosts who speak Spanish in their podcasts. But there is still a shortage of Spanish-language content.

With our original work, we’re working to bridge that gap, all while maintaining our dedication to the highest quality production possible, and while navigating this new world of producing at a distance. We will be announcing more Adonde Media Originals soon, so stay tuned! We can’t wait to share what we have in store for you.

Las Raras was founded by the journalist Catalina May and sound engineer Martín Cruz in 2016 with the goal of telling stories of freedom, focusing on people who break with the status quo and fight for social change. Covered by prestigious publications such as El País in Spain and CNN Chile, the podcast has won various awards and was the first Spanish language podcast chosen to participate in the Google Podcast creator program.
