In May 2021, we announced our grant-funded project to develop an open-source, prefab, plug-in garage ADU solution, Aduo. Our goal was to complete our first demonstration project in the Bay Area by the end of 2022. It took us a little bit longer than expected, but on February 17, 2023, we received a Certificate of Occupancy from the County of San Mateo for our North Fair Oaks Aduo. Check out the video below, which covers the final stages of the project. And here’s a recap of all five chapters of the video series:

  1. Chapter 1: An introduction to the project, including design discussion of the concept, name, and logo.
  2. Chapter 2: Prefab progress at the warehouse with iBuild Construction.
  3. Chapter 3: Groundbreaking at the North Fair Oaks site up to shear wall installation, plus an interview with the Rivera family.
  4. Chapter 4: Construction progress, including the first move of prefab pieces from the warehouse to the site, up through rough inspection
  5. Chapter 5: Final move of prefab pieces, final inspection, two conversations with local nonprofits, and a celebration with family and friends.

We are honored to have been featured in the SF Chronicle’s Fixing Our City podcast, which was released today. Check it out here.

There are many exciting steps left for this first demonstration, so please follow this Medium publication or our Facebook page to stay updated. We will finalize the basic Aduo design for Creative Commons licensing, publish a step-by-step description of the construction process on our website, and share detailed documentation of the products and costs that went into the project.

We’re also planning to build more Aduos! Our focus will be on East Palo Alto, Belle Haven, and North Fair Oaks, but feel free to reach out if you’re anywhere in the Bay Area and interested in trying out Aduo.
