In defence of sporting excellence
Fusion Sport was founded in Brisbane, Australia in 2003, offering world-class human performance data management systems. Proud Queenslander and Fusion Sport CEO, Dr Markus Deutsch talked to us about endurance, the Olympic Games and the company’s steady march towards a defence force clientele.

SMARTABASE is a cloud-hosted SaaS product for human performance data management. A highly customisable solution. It aggregates data from a wide range of areas such as medical and injury management, rehabilitation, sport science, psychology, performance analysis, coaching and administration, and transforms the data with interactive visualisation and analytics capabilities into actionable information for real-time decision making.
The SMARTSPEED range includes a variety of electronic measurement devices for profiling and training athletic qualities such as speed, power, endurance, skill and decision-making. Fusion has a comprehensive list of customers across elite sport globally including the AFL, NRL and A-League, English Premier League, NBA, NFL and MLB.
Fusion has also won a 4+3-year contract by the Australian Sports Commission to provide a National Athlete Data Management Solution, which now sees SMARTABASE used as the unified platform across all of Australia’s Olympic, Paralympic and Commonwealth Games programs.
In 2016, Fusion was awarded a three-year contract by the Australian Army to pilot the use of SMARTABASE in the Australian Defence Force.
How will the Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas Round 3 funding help your idea to develop?
The Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas Fund grant will allow the company to leverage its market-leading position in the elite sport performance market to cross over and expand into the defence human performance space in Australia, the US and the United Kingdom. Fusion Sport already works with a wide range of teams in the AFL, NRL, NBA, NFL and English Premier League. The Ignite Ideas funding will play a crucial part in helping us make this cross over and build the global support network we need to manage our growth into the military sector. We have averaged 25 per cent staff growth per annum over the last three years but now expect our company to double in size over the next three years.
Let’s say I’d like to work for your company. What do I need to know?
You need to be a team player with a love of technology and an interest in human performance.
What are the benefits of being an entrepreneur in Queensland?
I think Fusion Sport is a model case. We’ve had a lot of great funding and been on some trade missions too. The grant and mentoring assistance in Queensland is fantastic and we couldn’t have done it without this support. Queensland is a great place to bring people for business too. We’ve had conferences on the Gold Coast and so this state is a drawcard for both business and tourism and generally a really great place to live.
