Taking flight with the Halo UAV

Iridium Dynamics was founded in 2015 by a mechatronic engineering graduate to design new innovative aerospace technology. In 2017, the company was attracted to Queensland from New South Wales as part of the Advance Queensland Hot DesQ program. CEO Ian Conway Lamb talks UAVs in a commercial market set to reach USD $28.27 billion by 2022.

So tell us about your idea…?

Iridium Dynamics is commercialising an Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) with the greatest combined flight and hover capacity in the world. Halo is the first vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV that combines efficient forward-flight with efficient hover, enabling flight profiles which are impossible with other VTOL UAVs. With the Halo, inspection flights are possible which mix long distance forward-flight and extended-duration hovering. This approach enables rapid and cost-effective close-up inspections of remote structures, both from the side and from below.

How will the Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas Round 3 funding help your idea to develop?

The Advance Queensland Ignite Ideas Fund grant is helping us reduce our manufacturing costs to provide a product which is affordable even to smaller organisations operating long-range UAVs. The grant will ensure our manufacturing processes are perfected, and the product is thoroughly tested, so Iridium Dynamics develops a reputation for building high-reliability UAVs, starting with the first production models.

Let’s say I’d like to work for your company. What do I need to know?

Working at Iridium Dynamics is a lot of hard work, but a lot of fun. We’re using cutting-edge technology to design, build and test the next generation of cutting-edge aeronautical and robotics technologies. We have a long road ahead, but moving into the commercialisation phase of our first product is an exciting step. And from here, we will continue to innovate while we strive to become a leader in the international drone market.

What are the benefits of being an entrepreneur in Queensland?

Queensland has a very supportive startup ecosystem. In Brisbane we have found we have good access to financial support, academic expertise through the local universities, and great technical talent to grow the company.
