AI in 100 years…

Taking into account the exponential development of technology in recent history, I expect artificial intelligence to be fairly mature 100 years into the future. I imagine a world where all vehicles are autonomous, thus eliminating the need for things such as traffic signals. Transportation will be a lot more efficient, and the AI will be able to predict where the user is going to go before stepping into the vehicle. A world where video games are more immersive and convenience will be at an all-time high. With this rise in Artificial intelligence I also predict that a lot of jobs will be replaced or changed, like the effects of the industrial revolution. Many fields will start to focus a lot more heavily on human emotion and empathy, as AI would have replaced a lot of the other aspects. My hope is that people whose jobs are lost to AI end up finding other jobs, and ultimately people living in developed nations would not have to work 40 hours a week to maintain a high standard of living.

With all the positive impacts I see for AI in 100 years, I do have some fears and concerns. Would people suffer mental health issues from prolonged gaming with AI-enhanced virtual reality? Will people who have degrading and abusive sex with robots end up treating real people that way too? Or will it prevent that sort of behavior by serving as an outlet for unethical things so that people don’t do them to other people? Will that sort of thing become a real problem? With potential problems in mind though, I am personally not too worried about Artificial intelligence reaching the point where it will be able to do something ridiculous like take over humanity, at least not in the next 100 years.

Overall, although 100 years from now seems like a long time (and technologically speaking it can be), in the grand scheme of things it does not seem drastically far away to me. I don’t see a lot of the really cool sci-fi things happening in the next 100 years, but who knows, there are endless possibilities in innovation. It’s just too bad none of us will be around to see them.
