Our Commitment to Our LGBT Community Members
Keeping Pride alive throughout the year
As June comes to a close, we continue to celebrate our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community members and the immense contributions of leaders like Taissa Morimoto and Jason Tengco to advancing the civil and human rights of our communities and for raising visibility of Asian American and Pacific Islander LGBT experiences.
We have seen the incredible leadership of AAPI LGBT youth in elevating our communities’ achievements and challenges to a national level. Through projects and initiatives over the years, our AAPI LGBT youth leaders have shared with us their unique, intersectional stories that often go unheard:
We celebrate equality for all not just in June during Pride Month, but every day, and we are committed to ensuring that our communities remain visible and heard in national movements towards justice and a fair and equitable society.
Asian Americans Advancing Justice | AAJC has been proud to have had a part in the repeal of the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy; passage of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act; supporting the Uniting American Families Act, a bill to extend federal immigration benefits to same-sex spouses; and fighting against California’s Proposition 8 that violates the Constitution’s equal protection clause.
Today, we reaffirm our commitment to our LGBT community members. We continue to join our LGBT family members, friends, and neighbors in celebrating our achievements and addressing injustices and challenges our communities face, including those that exist in the intersections in being both AAPI and LGBT.
Let us continue to work with lawmakers and advocates to end all forms of discrimination and to increase equal access to essential services and benefits and support opportunities for all people. Together, let’s continue to support spaces where intersectional experiences, stories, and struggles can be shared, seen, and heard.
Advancing Justice | AAJC is proud to stand with the LGBT community and our AAPI LGBT community members.
