Brainance is a highly sophisticated web-based and user friendly post-processing and 3D visualization software suite, for the processing of three different brain MRI exams: Diffusion, Perfusion and Functional MRI.

Brainance can be used for the analysis and review of any case where Diffusion, Perfusion, Functional MRI or even just anatomical T1 or T2 scans have been acquired as part of the study protocol. Brainance, due to its state-of-the-art algorithms, can be applied in cases of brain tumours where the doctor needs to specify the damage that has been caused in the tumoral and the peritumoral areas. Moreover, other applications regard the cases of TBI, Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

Regarding the DTI processing, several maps (colormap, B0, FA map etc) are automatically calculated, based on the data exported from the MRI unit. The user can then select a region of interest (ROI) and either use the default values of the tracking parameters or modify them, in order to proceed to the tractography step. After conducting the fiber tracking, the user can choose among directional, FA or tract specific color coding for the reconstructed fibers, which can be presented in 2D or 3D space, and exported or saved to PACS. Statistical parameters (fiber length, FA, AD etc.) are also calculated for the reconstructed fiber bundles.

Regarding the DSC Perfusion processing, the data imported undergo normalisation and leakage correction, following the calculation of Cerebral Blood Volume (CBV, rCBV, nCBV), Cerebral Blood Flow (CBF, rCBF, nCBF), Mean Transit Time (MTT), Time to Peak (TTP), Bolus Start and End time maps. Histogram analysis is also available. Tissue response curves can be viewed for any region of interest (ROI) of the aforementioned maps. Finally, the user has the ability to fuse the perfusion-based calculated maps with the results extracted from the other modules of Brainance.

Functional MRI

Regarding the functional MRI processing, the data exported from the MRI unit pass through several analysis steps in order to gain insight on the experiment-related activations.

Pre-processing steps include slice-time correction, motion correction, coregistration, spatial smoothing, temporal filtering and pre-whitening in order to best prepare the data for the next steps. The statistical analysis to follow is implemented using the general linear model (GLM). The model (design matrix) is automatically set by default, but the user has the opportunity to modify it and then run statistical tests to explore task related activations presence in the voxels.

Fusion

Brainance is designed in order to promote the fusion between all the aforementioned MRI modalities. Thus, the user has the ability to combine the results (maps, fiber tracts etc.) of all the aforementioned processing. The most widely used fusion protocol regards the use of the fMRI activated regions as seed ROIs for the reconstruction of their connectivity through fiber tracking in the 3D space.
