Coronavirus School Closures: How to Use A2L as a Remote Learning Tool

How will your school respond if closed due to coronavirus concerns?

Fears around the coronavirus (Covid-19) have spread as schools begin to close due to new outbreaks across the nation. Much of what school officials have said related to how they plan to handle these closures is applicable not just to Covid-19, but also to the more common threat: the flu.

As schools contemplate closure for any period of time, there’s something to consider that wasn’t available during previous epidemics (ie: H1N1 flu epidemic of 2009) and that is the accessibility of online educational technology, also known as distance education.

For example, Miami Dade Public Schools announced that they have 200,000 devices that they can issue to students so they can continue their education through distance learning if necessary.

“If we have to shut down a school for any reason — and that’s a measure of last resort — or isolate classrooms of students where they would have to stay home, we are able to empower those students and families with devices with digital content so their education continues from a distance,” Miami-Dade Schools Superintendent Alberto Carvalho said.

However, not all districts and schools have resources like this. For those that don’t or are relying on families to use their own devices, they may have to resort to the old pencil and paper method or a hybrid of solutions.
