Pengra Bridge, OR

One of the scenic byways included a circular route of covered bridges near a small town called Cottage Groves. This seemed like a pretty cool idea and then we found out there was another area nearby that also had a bunch of covered bridges but wasn’t on the map. We decided to check out both areas, seeing about 9 structures plus an earth dam.

We didn’t spend too long at each one because it was pretty cold. On the other hand, it was nice to have clear skies and sunny days.

Covered bridges have a pretty long history in Oregon I read that there were over 100 built. While they share a similar construction, each one was different in span, height and width giving a unique character. The Byways catalogue book didn’t help us out very much because it talked about details and ornamentation that we didn’t see but they were all cozy in their own sort of way.

It seems there were just a few master builders who had a monopoly on bridge design so they designed the majority of the bridges in the State. This bridge was decommissioned and turned into a small museum.

This bridge is apparently used for a lot of wedding photographs. It seemed empty so I thought it would be a great chance to get a photo of Dad with his car. I didn’t see another group of tourists checking out the bridges and so they weren’t too pleased with us taking up the bridge. So we moved the car and they took their pictures.
